PLAY
WHAT IS PLAY?
Play means child-led, intrinsically motivated, personally directed, freely chosen and fun!
At Sport Hawke’s Bay, we champion play as the foundation for lifelong wellbeing. Play gives freedom and chances to take risks. It’s how our tamariki build a life-long love of being active, make sense of the world around them, get creative, build friendships, and learn skills.
Our role is to create opportunities for tamariki and whānau to engage in fun, inclusive, and active experiences that spark joy and build confidence. We work alongside schools, communities, and local partners to make play accessible in everyday spaces, whether through stencils on playgrounds, shared resources, or advocacy for play-friendly environments.

This inspiring video captures the schools’ transformative journey alongside their Healthy Active Learning Advisor, featuring happy, active and happy tamariki and practical insights into creating play-friendly environments.
Building playful neighbourhoods: The East Gore story
See how tamariki, schools, council and community partners came together in East Gore to create a neighbourhood play system that supports everyday play, connection and wellbeing.
How can we help?
I'm passionate about play, especially loose parts play. I’m a registered teacher with lots of play credentials - Play Work, Playcentre, Lego Serious Play, taonga tākaro, play streets, Play-based learning, Play policies, waka tākaro, Play facilitation and Play systems. And on the weekends, I explore the region with a trailer of loose parts for my business Loose Enz.
